Niagara is becoming known for cycling almost as much as for wine.
A great selection of bicycle routes and trails make this a popular destination for cyclists. At the Yellow Door, we provide secure bicycle storage along with tools for small tune-ups, nourishing breakfasts and, for a fee, luggage transfer. Click for our luggage transfer fees. How about cycling some or all of the Greater Niagara Circle Cycling Route (GNCR) (view a detailed map) which is over 140 km’s of paved, off-road trails and roadways? It winds along the Niagara River bordered by fruit orchards and vineyards, runs past the majestic Niagara Falls, and follows the sandy shores of Lake Erie. It offers “up close” views of the ships passing through the locks of the Welland Canal and opportunity to enjoy the beautiful historical towns such as Niagara-on-the-Lake. Another map may be of interest: the latest Cycling Map of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The route is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north, the Niagara River to the east, Lake Erie to the south and the Welland Canal to the west. You are seldom far from the water. The Yellow Door Bed and Breakfast located in Crystal Beach is just a few minutes away from the Friendship Trail which is a 24 km former rail trail, one of four cycling trails that together form the GNCR. If you are considering cycling the complete 140km GNCR, the Yellow Door makes a convenient overnight stop approximately half way from the northern end of the Welland Canals Parkway Trail, another of the four trails that make up the GNCR. Guests have reported that an ideal location to safely park a car overnight at the beginning of their two-day trip around the GNCR is the free parking lot in the Charles Ansell Park (click for map), close to Lock #1 of the Welland Canal in St. Catharines. The Park is located immediately south of the intersection of Lakeshore Road and Bunting Road in St. Catharines. (We can assume no responsibility for the safety of vehicles left overnight in this Park). For an easy 11km ride around the heart of Crystal Beach, see this route on BikeMap.net After your ride, you can enjoy a refreshing drink on our front porch or back deck or enjoy the flawless sands and crystal-blue waters of Bay Beach. Should you wish to leave your vehicle parked at the Yellow Door while you spent one or more nights in other accommodation, a nightly fee of $10 will be charged. We were awarded a 2019 Best Bicycle Friendly Business Award by Ontario By Bike for the Niagara Region. |
