The art of Clobbering traces its origins to Holland and England where, during the 18th century, purveyors of Chinese export porcelain added coloured enamel decoration to the original blue and white underglaze. Customers wanted more colourful and original pieces, and workshops soon sprang up in Amsterdam and London to meet the demand. The practice soon extended to jewelry makers as well.
Today, in his atelier in the historic village of Crystal Beach, on the shores of Ontario’s Lake Erie, Arthur [last name] creates some of the finest examples of clobbered jewelry in Canada. Working with precious metals, and using both contemporary and antique jewelry as the foundation, he fashions treasures that are sure to become family heirlooms.
Visits to his atelier can be arranged by appointment only, with full COVID-19 protocols in place. Drop-in visits are not permitted.
Arthur is pleased to discuss creating original custom peices, using the client’s jewelry if requested, in order to satisfy individual needs.
As an additional service to clients, and in the tradition of historical European practices, silver cleaning and restoration are also available.
